Cohan a présenté son deuxième spectacle deux mois jour pour jour après "The Talk of New York". C’était une œuvre plus émotionnelle d’habitude . Cohan avait longtemps idolâtré Ned Harrigan, qui jouait dans les vieux spectacles de "Harrigan et Hart". Hanigan s’était retiré de la scène, et Broadway l’avait plus ou moins oublié. Mais Cohan s’en était souvenu et l’avait invité à la première de "Fifty Miles from Boston". Là, Harrigan découvrit qu’un des rôles principaux du spectacle portait son nom, en son honneur.
Harrigan aime Sadie Woodis, mais elle lui préfère Joe Westcott, le héros de baseball de Brookfield, Massachusetts. Le frère de Sadie, Jed, a volé 400$ à la poste et a perdu cet argent lors d'un pari. Harrigan propose de donner cet argent à Jed s’il arrive à persuader Joe d’abandonner Sadie. Mais Sadie reste fidèle à Joe. Jed pense qu’il va aller en prison mais Harrigan réalisant à quel point sa position est ignoble, donne Jed l’argent malgré tout.
